marilynandbob > We're on our way to Moab!! The canyon country there is spectacular and unique; no other place like it on earth. Sandstone, eroded by water and wind, amazing towers and canyons ~ this time of year (October) is good there, because it's super hot in the summer. This photo shows the Colorado River, with some of the sandstone features with Fisher Towers on the right in the background.
marilynandbob > Bob is in front of a famous feature in Arches National Park ~ it's called Balanced Rock.In the background are the La Sal mountains. Weather perfect, great hiking and sightseeing. Arches is right outside of Moab.
marilynandbob > Marilyn is posed in front of a feature called Upheaval Dome- one theory is that a meteorite hit this area. Another theory is a natural upthrust of a salt layer deposited when there was a huge inland sea in this area. It's deep and spectacular, and a nice little hike off the main road.
marilynandbob > Yikes!!! Marilyn is being chased by one of the giant spiders that reside in the Moab area. I think it's an ad for Spider, a brand of outdoor gear. Why doesn't it realize that I'm a kindred spirit?
marilynandbob > We're under a tremendous feature in Arches National Park--- one of the Window Arches. These are formed when erosion wears down around these upthrusts, and then the inside rock sections fall away. Eventually they will all wear down, but right now, they are standing and thrilling spectators, including us.
marilynandbob > Here's the long view of our pose under North Window Arch. Climbing up here to the top gives a great view of more arches and windows on the other side.
marilynandbob > We got a permit to hike into the Firey Furnace area within Arches National Park. It's amazing ~ the uplifted red rocks look like flames from a furnace (hence the name). We scrambled over rocks and through fun little and big canyons. Marilyn climbed up on the rock so Bob could get this shot.
marilynandbob > Looking back from the Firely Furnace area toward the mountains and the sunset glowing on the rock formations along the road. SImply lovely.
marilynandbob > Within the Firey Furnace hiking area. Bob's under a really old, gnarled tree. There are no structured trails within this area, and we had to be instructed in avoiding climbing on the sand dunes and not walking on cryptobiotic soil crust ~ these structures support the fragile life of lichen, fungus and plant matter in this harsh environment. It was a fun challenge to navigate around in this area and avoid these areas.
