marilynandbob > About a 90 minute drive from Durango is the tiny town of Dolores, and a few miles farther is a great National Forest campground, right on the West Dolores River. We stayed a few nights and met up with Kathleen and Milt May, who often camp here. It's very laid-back and quiet, and we were able to take some nice walks along the river, among other things.
marilynandbob > Our trailer is very comfortable, and Rafiki has become really good at staying in the campsite and not running all over the place. While we were here there were a few bear sightings- it's that season, after all. Getting a little cool at night, but still very warm and comfortable.
marilynandbob > A high point of the trip was a great hike up into the Lizzard Head wilderness area. Lizzard Head pass is on beyond Dolores, and goes over to Telluride. This trail was recommended by Kathleen and Milt, and it was a wonderful hike, 4 miles in and 4 miles back. Some uphill, through beautiful stands of aspen, evergreen and cottonwood, and across a few streams. We didn't run into anyone else along the way, but signed the log at the beginning of the trail and noticed that it's very popular.
marilynandbob > A view toward the start of the trail, with Rafiki leading the way.
marilynandbob > A view back along the trail, with the mountains near Telluride in the distance. As you see, it was a glorious day, and soon we were in the trees.
marilynandbob > A beautifully maintained trail into the wilderness.
marilynandbob > Here's our half-way point, the turn around where the Kilpacker Trail meets the Navajo Lake Trail. See how cute Rafiki is posing?
